Financial Freedom – Can Doctors REALLY Achieve It?

What’s Your Financial Freedom Definition?

It seems like everybody is striving for “financial freedom” these days even though they’re not quite sure what it means.

Literally every article I read or podcast I listen to has some mention of it.

Let me ask you a question…

What’s your financial freedom definition?

If you answered, “It’s when I get rich!” or “When I’m financially independent” then I’d have to disagree with you.

Why? Well, I know many rich, financially independent people who are anything but financially free.

For them, money and wealth are a ball and chain, as they have no life outside of work constantly chasing the next dollar.

The confusion seems to be that people think financial freedom is a destination. Actually it’s not a “one day” kind of thing.

It’s something you can (and more importantly SHOULD) experience today.

Freedom From Work?

Are you trying to escape the rat race and break free from work? Is that what your freedom exists of?

The financial freedom definition isn’t freedom from work either. Sorry.

If so, it’d imply that work is a BAD thing which I don’t believe it is. We didn’t go through all of that training to throw it away as quickly as possible did we?

Colossians 3:23 – “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters…

Remember when you interviewed for dental/medical school and was asked “why you wanted to be a doctor?”

Most of us answered that we wanted to “help” people, right?

If going through training to assist in the well being of others is bad then what’s the point in learning how to do it in the first place?

It’s not bad.

It’s a GREAT service and you should be proud of your career and hard work/sacrifice to get to where you are today. You deserve it. 🙂

So you’re probably asking yourself, “If financial freedom isn’t being rich or being retired, then what is it?

Financial Freedom Definition

#1. Freedom from want

I understand that it’s difficult to feel as if you’re financially free if you’re without food or homeless. So the first thing we must focus on is having our basic needs met.

For those reading this article, you already have this covered because of your career/job. My 15 year old is a bus boy at a local restaurant making minimum wage and he has his needs met even with his paltry salary.

But for us, it also implies that we find a certain level of fulfillment from our career. You can see its value to yourself and to others.

You should feel good about what you do and the value you’re creating for others.

#2. Freedom from worry

What worries keep you up at night?

What if you were able to erase those completely?

Things such as debt, volatile investments your brother-in-law talked you into, overspending and financial vulnerability to adverse life events.

If you remove ALL those things then you’ll be able to worry LESS.

#3. Freedom from wondering

Occasionally patients will ask me at the end of their consultation, “Hey Doc, tell me what I should be asking you that I don’t know to ask.”

In essence, what they’re trying to say is, “I don’t know what I don’t know.”

Typically, a financial plan that addresses ALL aspects of your money and life can help remove that feeling of NOT knowing.

You understand where you are now and the direction you’re headed.

By knowing this, you’re more confident that if you stick with the plan, you’ll catch the train on time.

#4. Freedom from wandering

I spoke with a new Passive Investors Circle member recently while getting in my weekly steps on the treadmill. One of the first things I ask new members is about the financial goals they’ve set for themselves.

He answered like most, “We don’t really have goals, just looking for some passive income.”

I informed him that… “if you don’t where you’re going, any road will get you there”.

It’s hard to stay focused and on track without a known direction. You tend to wander and meander….

If you don’t believe me, take a look at some of the investment blogs/forums/FB groups.

You’ll have someone touting how they’re doing great in the stock market one day then hate it the next when it drops. The next day they love real estate (because they can put their hands on it!) until they hate it because tenants are so unreliable.

Then they’re born again Dave Ramsey debt eliminators until they find out that gold and Bitcoin are going through the roof!

It’s a never ending cycle.

Unfortunately, the person that evaluates every new financial fad that comes along is NOT free. Having a plan frees you from that necessity to keep lifting up the freshly laid sod every week to see how it’s growing.

How Do You Get Financial Freedom?

Now that we understand what you have freedom from, let me ask you:

  • What’s your financial freedom definition?
  • How important is financial freedom to you?
  • If you’re already there, what’s it feel like?

Whenever you have financial freedom, you have options. Both in life and with money.

You like options?

With financial freedom, you can:

  • Choose your career no matter the salary
  • Order whatever you want on the menu! 🙂
  • Travel the world (with or without kids 🙂 )
  • Give more
  • Donate your time
  • Worry less so you can live more

Remember, both your money AND your life require a plan. And the freedom that results from the plan doesn’t come at the journey’s end like we’ve been taught.

It comes at the beginning!

The key to being financially free is to BEGIN.
