After I had a job offer joining a periodontal group practice fall through two weeks before graduating, I shifted from an abundance mindset to one of scarcity.
Even though I had close to $300K in student loan debt, the thought of starting out with a good income kept me thinking with an abundance mindset until the job was off the table.
Honestly, it’s taken years to go from a scarcity mindset to one with abundance.

The late Stephen Covey originally coined the terms “scarcity mentality/ mindset” and “abundance mentality/mindset” in his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
He states that most of us have one of two mindsets; they either see life through the lens of scarcity or abundance.
When you live in a world of scarcity, you’re constantly competing for available resources, even when they are abundantly available.
When someone lives with a growth mindset, they believe there’s enough resources and successes to be shared with others.
The bottom line is those living with a scarcity mindset are controlled by fear. It’s not a good place to be in.
On the other hand, those who choose to adopt to live with an abundant life view a world that’s full of possibilities.
